Iris (Through the Rounded Glass)

From time to time, the stars align to give us a (hopefully good) new fashion documentary. Lately, I've caught up on Netflix the documentary "Iris", directed by Albert Maysles, that follows the life of Iris Apfel, the nonagenarian fashion icon. Iris's unique character and style sense makes this documentary a must-see for everyone interested in fashion, but also a pleasant view for everyone else. Named a rara avis of the fashion world, everything that surrounds Iris is original, an apology for the "more is more" motto, from her over-stuffed home to her eccentric late husband (who died shortly after the film was made). Her wardrobe, full of one of a kind pieces and collector's items is an stand-out for everybody who melts over the thought of vintage.

The documentary follows her life from her early days as an interior designer for the high society to her unexpected success as an elderly woman. Because age is a very important part of the documentary and the recognition of old age as a joyful time of life is a central theme of it. Iris doesn't shy away from complaining about her ailments, she doesn't fake youthfulness because she doesn't needs to. She's proud of her age. In an endearing moment of the documentary, Iris meets Kanye West during the CFDA Awards. She tells him she's a fan of him and his surprised reaction is priceless.

So go now and watch this lovely documentary and fall in love with Iris Apfel, fashion's favorite granny.
